This adventure in giant needles was born out of my frustration with the constant warm Tel-Aviv sunshine of summer keeping my super bulky projects at bay. I wanted to dust off my 12mm, US 17 needles and make SOMETHING, even if it was with worsted weight yarn.
For this pattern you will need:
200g or about 350 yards of heavy worsted weight yarn like Caron one pound or Stylecraft chunky
US 17 or 15 (13-12mm) 24in circulars or straight needles
A tapestry needle for seaming
Glossary: K=knit, Yo= yarn over
We’ll start by working the back panel
To begin, cast on 55 stitches
Row 1: Knit all stitches
Row 2: Knit all stitches
Row 3: *K1, yo* repeat between * to the end and knit the last stitch
Row 4: *K1, drop the yo without working it*. Repeat between * to the end, knit the last stitch.
Row 5-7: Knit all stitches
Row 8: *K1, yo twice* repeat between * to the end, knit last stitch
Row 9: *K1, drop the yarn overs without working them*. Repeat between* to the end of the row, knit the last stitch.
Row 10: Knit all stitches
Repeat rows 1-10 two more times for a total of 30 rows
Repeat rows 1-4 one time
Then repeat rows 3-4 three times and bind off.
Repeat the pattern for the front panel but end by only repeating rows 3-4 two times and bind off.
Seaming
To seam your panels together, line up the bind off edges. Thread a tapestry needle and seam the edges together by stitching under both legs of the bind off “V” stitch. Only stitch together the first 15 stitches on either side of the top. The open center is the neck hole.
Starting at the bottom of the shirt, seam up the sides for 8 inches. There’s no ‘right’ way to do this part due to the loose dropped stitches, just make sure your seaming is even and doesn’t bunch up.
Turn the finished shirt inside out and give it a good wash and dry.
